Glasgow based indie rock band Jack Brotherhood have announced their debut album 'Osprey Season' out 12th June. The self-released record, which received funding from Creative Scotland, has so far spawned the singles 'Osprey Season' and 'Nausea', which had BBC Radio Scotland airplay. Today, Jack Brotherhood have shared new track 'Second Wind' as they count down to the album's release fresh off the back of an appearance at Glasgow's King Tut's Wah Wah Hut.
Commenting on the track, frontman Logan Stewart says: “Having spent years with a chronic illness that only ever seemed to get worse, I wrote 'Second Wind' a few months after finally finding a medication that worked. As Scots, we're not necessarily known for our optimism, but discovering I could live a normal life unhindered fifilled me with endless joy and wonder, and continues to do so.”
“[Jack Brotherhood guitarist] Ray and I have dreamed of making an album since we were kids and it's been such a privilege to still have him beside me as we finally get round to it a mere twenty years later," says Logan Stewart of his band's debut album.
“I think over the years we've managed to tick every box of being clueless, of not being trendy, of being perfectionists, of not being perfectionist enough... Ultimately it's great to finally have something out there that says this is where we're at, come check it out. A recurring theme on the album is finding peace with whatever situation I find myself in: fears I never overcame, relationships that aren't what they were, dumb stuff I should have stopped doing by now. I think a lot of that can only come from edging out your youth and releasing you left a lot of items on your to-do list. Not to worry!”
These themes are set to an indie rock soundtrack inspired by the band's Scottish influences such as Frightened Rabbit and Idlewild, but that also bring in the transatlantic aspects of emo, heartland rock, and Americana (several songs on the album feature pedal steel and fiddle). Tracks like 'Nausea' have the alt-country intensity of bands like Pinegrove and Ratboys, while 'Flightless Bird' sees the band approach Tom Petty territory.
The album features band members Ray Syed (guitar), Sam Bingham (bass) and Jamie McHarg (drums), alongside features from Roo Geddes (fiddle), Owen Nicholson (pedal steel, lap steel) and Adam Hunter (guitar, vocals). It was produced by Paul McInally at 45 A-side Recordings in Glasgow and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios.
